The 2700-mile Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail takes the hiker from Mexico to Canada through the mountains of California, Oregon and Washington. This wilderness trail is purpose built for the exclusive use of hikers and horse-riders and takes you easily through some of the most fantastic scenery in the world, with the added advantage that you can expect clear sunny weather for most of your hike.
The arid mountains and deserts of Southern California are followed by the magnificent glaciated mountains of the High Sierra. You have the option of climbing Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the US outside Alaska, before following the John Muir Trail to Yosemite National Park. The Cascade Mountains of Northern California, Oregon and Washington are dominated by volcanoes rising to over 14,000ft.
Most hikers will be hiking short sections of the trail, but several hundred each year take on the ultimate challenge of thru'-hiking the entire trail in one summer. This comprehensive guidebook provides all the information you need to plan and undertake a hike of the PCT.
* detailed maps with route description and points of interest divided into 101 sections
* recommended diversions from the PCT
* information about supplies and other services
* detailed information for planning a short hike or a thru'-hike, including advice on safety and equipment
Seasons
The PCT is designed to be hiked when it is free of snow; Southern California is best in the Spring or Autumn and the High Sierra, Northern California, Oregon and Washington are best from late June to early October
Centres
Most hikers access the PCT from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle or Vancouver, all of which are about 50 miles west of the trail
Difficulty
The PCT is a well-engineered trail taking the hiker easily through the mountains but it is a wilderness trail, often a long way from road access, and you will need to carry food for several days; there is little accommodation so you will need to camp or bivouac
Must See
The High Sierra of California with Mount Whitney, the John Muir Trail and Yosemite National Park; Crater Lake in Oregon; the towering volcanoes of the Cascade Mountains: Lassen Peak, Mount Shasta, The Three Sisters, Mount Washington, Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood, Mount Adams, Mount Rainier and Glacier Peak
